Former Yankees prospect Cale Coshow announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday, taking to his social media channels to make the announcement in a love letter to the sport.
“From the first time I picked you up, I knew I fell in love with the game. From age 5 to 30, I continued to pour every ounce of my being into you and you would give me with the best memories,” Coshow wrote. “I’ve been so blessed these last 9 years to be able to have played in the iconic pinstripes of the New York Yankees and for the Detroit Tigers. I’ve gotten to play with some of the best in the game and I will miss all the moments with my teammates, from the daily competition grind, to the bus rides, way too many stories to tell.”
Coshow thanked all his former teammates, coaches, and team staff, as well as his family, before making the announcement official.
“As of today, I’m walking away from that game I love. Not sure what my future holds, but I know who holds it,” he wrote.
Coshow never made the show, but he did spend parts of three seasons in Triple-A after being the Yankees’ 13th-round pick in 2013 out of Oklahoma Christian University, where he spent his final collegiate season after being cut from the University of Oklahoma squad.
The hefty righty pitched 77 1/3 innings for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders from 2017-19, finishing his career in pinstripes in that latter season as he reached minor-league free agency. Coshow made a handful of appearances in the independent American Association during the 2020 MiLB shutdown before hooking on with the Tigers, for whom he posted a 4.13 ERA in 48 innings at Double-A Erie in 2021.
Coshow may not be sure what his future holds, but he does have someone to occupy his time immediately: he became a father last fall, he and his wife welcoming son Collier on October 29.
