Frankie Montas, who hasn’t pitched since Sept. 16 with a shoulder injury, is on the Yankees’ ALCS roster, but if used, it won’t be in a familiar role.
“As a reliever,” Aaron Boone said of Montas’ expected usage in this ALCS against the Astros, a team he had success against this season while with the A’s. “He's not that built up. We'll see, hopefully he pitches well and gets in there and starts having an impact, and it starts to become more than that.
“But I was really encouraged by what I saw in his live outing over the weekend in Tampa. I felt like, he looks really healthy to me and strong and I felt like the ball was coming out really well. So excited to get him in the mix and hopefully he can play a little bit of a role for us at some point in this series getting some big outs. But I feel like physically he's ready for that.”
Montas told reporters he doesn’t believe he will be getting up to 60 or 70 pitches in an appearance, but he is ready to help the team in whatever way he can, and would be able to go “two innings-plus.”
“I think I'm going to be out of the bullpen, but I told them whatever they want me to do, if they want me to be an opener, a starter, whatever, a reliever, whatever they want me to do, I'm willing to do whatever just to help us win,” Montas said.
“I feel pretty good right now, so if they need me to pitch back-to-back games, I'll be ready for it.”
