Frankie Montas to miss first month of season due to shoulder inflammation: Report

Frankie Montas just settled on a salary for 2023, avoiding arbitration, but continued shoulder issues will reportedly keep the righty on the shelf for the first month of the regular season.

According to the New York Post, Montas will miss the first month because he is “8-10 weeks behind” in his offseason training due to shoulder inflammation, the same injury that interrupted his 2022 season on multiple occasions, both with the A’s and after he was traded to the Yankees before the trade deadline.

Montas, 29, struggled badly with the Yankees after the trade, and was placed on the IL in September with shoulder inflammation. He has made eight starts with the Yanks, posting a 6.35 ERA. He pitched once in the postseason, allowing a home run in one inning of relief work.

With Montas reportedly starting the season on the shelf, Domingo German or Clarke Schmidt could slide into the rotation behind Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Nestor Cortes.
