El Gary is back in the Bronx, and he didn’t take long to make his presence known.
Gary Sanchez played his first game back at Yankee Stadium Monday since being dealt to Minnesota in the off-season, and after grounding out in his first at-bat, Sanchez unloaded a mammoth home run like many of the ones he hit as a Yankee:
The blast, into the Christian Lopez seats in the left field bleachers, left Sanchez’s bat at 115.1 MPH and traveled 473 feet according to StatCast – and came one day after he was nearly decapitated by a practice swing from Celestino in the on-deck circle.
Sanchez was dealt along with Gio Urshela to the Twins for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Triple-A catcher Ben Rortvedt in March, and the Yankees played a tribute video for the pair in between innings earlier in the game.
The 29-year-old catcher entered Monday hitting .213 with 13 home runs and 45 RBI in 100 games this season for the Twins, his last before he reaches free agency for the first time.
