Gary Sanchez and his trainer posted a video of the free agent catcher working out on Tuesday, with Sanchez wearing a Yankees shirt while lifting weights and going through his workout, and eventually taking swings and receiving pitches in the cage.

Not surprisingly, Sanchez’s attire quickly fueled speculation among Yankee fans that the divisive backstop could be heading for a return to New York.

Sanchez enjoyed plenty of early success with the Yankees, as his historic rookie season in 2016 led to an All-Star campaign in 2017, and he had one of the biggest hits of the postseason that year, a go-ahead double in game four of the ALCS to tie the series at two apiece. But he struggled badly a year later, and after briefly returning to All-Star form in 2019, he only continued to trend downhill.

After a brutal 2020 and 2021, Sanchez was traded to the Twins in a package that included Gio Urshela and brought back Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Josh Donaldson, and Ben Rortvedt. In Minnesota, Sanchez posted a .659 OPS with 16 home runs in 128 games.

Now a free agent, Sanchez is still looking for a home, and his choice in clothing during a workout has some Yankee fans dreading, and others, dreaming about, a potential return.
