Gio and Jerry: Nestor Cortes is Yankees best pitcher right now

Nestor Cortes is the talk of the town after another dominant performance on Monday, allowing one hit over 7.1 shutout innings to lower his season ERA to a microscopic 1.41.

Cortes has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, but doing it in a much different way than the modern pitcher, and with a much different look. But Gio and Jerry say that’s exactly what makes him a cult favorite in New York.

“Mustache, crafty, the whole thing,” Gio said during Tuesday’s show. “If he pitches this well for the entire season, what a boon for them. My God.”

Jerry says Cortes is far more than a cult favorite. Right now, since last year’s resurgence and now this year’s dominance, the 5-foot-11 lefty is the best pitcher on the staff, which of course includes Gerrit Cole.

“From what I’ve seen, he’s their best pitcher right now,” Jerry said. “He’s their best starter.”

Cortes has highlighted a sparkling start to the season by a Yankee rotation that has masked the team’s periodic offensive slumps. That was on full display in their series win over the Rangers, where the offense scored just five runs in two games, but won two of them. Cortes and Cole highlight the rotation, but Luis Severino, Jameson Taillon, and Jordan Montgomery have all been on their game as well, helping the Yanks to the best record in baseball.

“Their staff, which we went into the year thinking was gonna be a weakness, is a huge strength,” Gio said.
