Gio: Carlos Rodon looking like Brian Cashman's latest free agent bust

Carlos Rodon was having an inspiring bounceback season for the Yankees, but has completely imploded over his last five starts, including allowing four first-inning runs to the Rays on Tuesday night.

Rodon has now lost five straight starts, continues to get burned by the long ball, and continues to cast doubt over the $162 million contract that he signed prior to the 2023 season.

“You can add him to a long list of guys not named Gerrit Cole who have come over here, gotten a ton of money to be a starting pitcher, and have become horrible,” Gio said.

“It’s amazing how Brian Cashman, and all the good he has done, has missed on those guys a good 95 percent of the time.”

Rodon’s debut season with the Yanks was nothing short of a nightmare, and his recent swoon isn’t providing any pushback to Gio’s declaration. There have been solid starting pitching contracts given out by Cashman, including Cole, CC Sabathia, and Masahiro Tanaka, but a load of others have flopped, and Rodon is currently highlighting a pitching staff that has suddenly become the worst in baseball over their recent stretch.

“Their pitching has been brutal,” Boomer said. “I know we all sit here and lament the fact that DJ LeMahieu isn’t the same as he was three years ago, and Gleyber Torres, the problems at third base…we can talk about that until the cows come home. But the pitching has been brutal.”
