Gio Urshela did indeed begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, going 3-for-4 in a game for Double-A Somerset against Altoona.
There was concern Urshela may be held out until Tuesday due to inclement weather in the Northeast from Hurricane Henri, but with the forecast in Altoona, Pennsylvania, looking okay, the Yankees' third baseman began his rehab with the Patriots.
Hitting second and playing third base, Urshela grounded out in his first at-bat, but he singled and scored in the third, doubled in the fourth, and singled and scored in the sixth. He was replaced in the bottom of that inning, and only fielded one chance at third: a 5-3 putout to end the fifth inning.
Monday is a minor league-wide off day, so Urshela’s next rehab game, if he does not join the Yankees in Atlanta, will be either in Somerset (they open a six-game home set with Akron on Tuesday) or Lehigh Valley, where the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders play their six-game set next week.
