Yankees Notes: Gleyber Torres back in lineup, Clint Frazier dealing with neck issue

The Yankees get a key player back for Wednesday’s matchup with the Rangers, but could be losing another.

While Gleyber Torres is back from the COVID-19 list and in Wednesday night’s lineup, Clint Frazier is dealing with a neck issue that has kept him out of the lineup. Miguel Andujar (getting another start in left field), Brett Gardner and Ryan LaMarre make up the outfield for Wednesday night’s game, the third game of a four-game set in Texas.

Boone said Frazier, who has been struggling since the start of the season, is “dealing with some neck things,” but needed to see what that entailed. The manager wasn’t sure if it was just stiffness bothering Frazier or something more, but he is receiving treatment.

“I don’t know if it’s stiffness or what, but we’re looking into that and what it could mean,” Boone said. “He’s been going through different testing and stuff. He’ll be out for BP and going through his routine…just taking the precaution.”

Frazier is off to a dreadful start to his first season as a regular starter, batting .151 with four home runs and a .582 OPS. His struggles are disappointing for a once highly-touted prospect who posted an OPS of .905 in 2020, finally earning him the starting role in left field after battling for playing time over the previous four seasons.

Wednesday is Frazier’s second straight game out of the lineup. He laid out for a diving catch in right field on May 16 against the Orioles, but Boone said he wasn’t sure if that is what led to Frazier’s neck troubles.
