Craig: Yankees should 'fire a lot of people' if Anthony Volpe caught mechanical tweak on his own

Anthony Volpe told reporters on Tuesday night after his two-hit performance that he and former minor league teammate Austin Wells, while watching video of his at-bats, caught a mechanical tweak that he believes helped him in Tuesday’s encouraging performance.

While that’s great news for the Yankees, Craig can’t get over the fact that nobody else on the Yankees coaching staff caught it while the 22-year-old was batting under .200.

“The Yankees, you’ve got video replay, hitting coaches, managers, all these experts on baseball,” Craig said. “The dude fixes his swing over spaghetti and chicken parm in Watchung, New Jersey, at an Olive Garden?

“If I’m the New York Yankees, I’m firing a lot of people. I don’t know who the Yankee hitting instructor is, but I’m gonna fire him today.”

The Yankees voiced their support of Volpe on Tuesday, telling reporters there had been no discussions of sending him back to the minors. But if those discussions weren’t happening, couldn’t that free time be spent pouring over video to try and fix him, rather than Volpe figuring it out himself?

“The Yankees sat by with this kid hitting .110, and said ‘We’re just gonna keep playing him,’” Craig said. “And the kid is like, ‘Can I have some chicken parm? Oh look, my toe is pointing the wrong way,’ and now he’s gonna bat .190.”
