Gleyber Torres is on the IL with a thumb sprain, but Aaron Boone told reporters on Monday that the shortstop appears to have avoided the worst and could be back sooner than later.
“We’ll know a lot more in the next couple days when he sees a specialist and all that,” Boone said. “I’d say [Sunday] night we got good news. I think we were concerned it was gonna be more serious, and as of right now, it’s a sprained thumb…the initial thought is 10-20 days, but realistically, we’ll have a better idea in the next couple days. But I was texting with Gleyber [Monday] afternoon and he seemed a little relieved…I think we kind of were expecting the worst and probably got some pretty good news last night.”
With Torres out, Gio Urshela would have been an easy fill-in to slide into the shortstop role, but after appearing to be on the cusp of returning from the IL, Boone said he suffered a setback with his hamstring injury and was sent back to New York.
“When he was out running and doing his ground balls yesterday, he felt a little something towards the end of his ground balls, so he’s back in New York, so I don’t anticipate him being with us this week,” Boone said. “I don’t think it’s that serious, but he was probably in line to be back in the lineup and join us on Wednesday. That’s not gonna happen now…whether that pushes it back later in the week or into next week, I don’t have the timeline on that yet. But I don’t think it’s back to where he started.”
Luis Severino had already suffered a setback of his own in the form of a groin injury, but after pitching well in his rehab start on Sunday, Boone said the righty’s next rehab outing on Friday could be his last before joining the Yankees and pitching in a big league game for the first time since the 2019 ALCS. His return would be a welcomed sight for a pitching staff decimated by injuries and COVID-19 cases.
“He threw really well [Sunday]…it was a great sign,” Boone said. “He’ll make another start Friday, get built up a little more and then we’ll have a decision in front of us. Whether he takes another one, or potentially at that point is with us, but he’s certainly getting close and he’s feeling really good.”
