Boomer & Gio debate: Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Oswaldo Cabrera at shortstop in ALCS?

Isiah Kiner-Falefa didn’t start for the second straight game to close out Tuesday’s ALDS, and even after an injury to Aaron Hicks, wasn’t the next option, as Marwin Gonzalez went to left field and Oswaldo Cabrera stayed at short.

But Boomer still believes Kiner-Falefa is the better defensive option at shortstop than Cabrera, and that we might still see him there in the ALCS.

“I don’t think so,” Boomer said when asked if Kiner-Falefa’s time as shortstop is over. “I think IKF is [better defensively].

“You’re asking this kid to do a lot of different things.”

Gio sides more with Cabrera, who has played nearly every position in the field in his rookie season, and despite some bobbles on Tuesday, has shown a veteran’s poise in his first taste of the postseason.

“We’ve seen more of IKF at shortstop, so there’s more opportunities for screw-ups,” Gio said. “I don’t know man, it’s a flip of the coin for me.

“[Cabrera] has excelled for the most part. [Tuesday] wasn’t great defensively, but he’s excelled for the most part. The moment isn’t too big for Oswaldo.”
