Luis Severino has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season, with Severino himself saying as much.

Both Boomer and Jerry agree that Severino should be shut down, perhaps for the season, but Jerry doesn’t want to hear any complaints about Severino’s contract.

“I don’t want to hear this idea that they made this huge mistake by giving him the contract,” Jerry said. “It’s what the Braves and the Rays have been doing. The Yankees, it hasn’t worked out right now, but that’s what they were doing with one of their own. They were trying to make good and sign him early, it made sense.”

Severino signed a five-year, $52.25 million extension after the 2018 season to buy out his arbitration years, paying him just over $10 million a year after being an All-Star and a Cy Young finalist for the second straight season. Had Severino maintained that level of production, the contract would have been a steal. But injuries have plagued the rest of his Yankee career, though Jerry says Brian Cashman deserves no blame for trying to lock up his young ace.

“Don’t have that part of the Brian Cashman bashing,” Jerry said. “It was the right move at the time. It made sense.”
