One of the biggest criticisms of the Yankees, if you scroll through both the Twitterverse and elsewhere in the media, is that the team doesn’t seem to have any sense of urgency no matter the situation.
Jimmy O’Brien, better known to the social media world as Jomboy and famous for his hot mic alerts and breakdowns of baseball situations, told Moose & Maggie on Tuesday that he agrees.
“The urgency is only in the fans. I know the players are hurting, because they don’t want to lose, but they haven’t treated a regular season with urgency since Girardi,” Jomboy said. “I like Boone, I’m not trying to knock him, but they admitted to it after Game 1 in Cleveland: the regular season is just a long spring training. And it just really bothers me that they did flip the switch, because it doesn’t work.”
An example, por favor, Jomboy?
“The batting order changes every day, so there’s no consistency for these hitters at all and no routine – but as soon as the postseason starts, your 1-7 is the same every day,” he said.
But when Maggie mentioned that similar strategies work for the Rays, who entered Tuesday up 2-0 in the ALCS, Jomboy replied, “but they do that all season and keep doing it – the Yankees completely change their whole entire strategy.”
So, then, what might be a strategy the Yankees can re-think in terms of urgency?
“Utilizing the trade deadline, and making a trade there might be nice?” he laughed. “Like, this year, it would have been really cool to have another reliever to help after losing Kahnle and completely abandoning Ottavino. And, they knew Paxton wasn’t coming back, so why didn’t they make any moves for relievers, or a second-tier starter they could’ve moved to the bullpen, like Drew Pomeranz last year?”
