Yankees' Justin Wilson to have MRI Tuesday after leaving Monday's game with left shoulder tightness

New York Yankees reliever Justin Wilson will be re-evaluated and undergo an MRI on Tuesday, after leaving Monday night’s game against the Phillies due to tightness in his left shoulder.

“The way he described it, [he] was just having a hard time getting loose out there,” manager Aaron Boone said after Monday’s loss to the Phillies. “We’ll see what we have in the morning. I think there’s a chance it might not be that big a deal.”

Wilson entered in the seventh inning and threw 20 pitches without recording an out. He allowed a Rhys Hoskins single and a two-run homer by Didi Gregorius, then walked Alec Bohm on five pitches. His 20th and final pitch worked a 3-2 count against Odubel Herrera, but after that pitch, Wilson he called to the dugout, while appearing to squeeze his left hand.

Boone and trainer Steve Donohue came out, and Wilson left the game to be replaced by Nestor Cortes, who walked Herrera before retiring the next three in a row.

Wilson’s velocity was down according to the radar gun – his fastball lost 2-3 MPH from where he was in his previous appearance – and the Yankees will now have to hope that they don’t have a second serious injury to a left-handed setup man this spring, following Zack Britton’s elbow surgery.

The 33-year-old had signed a two-year, $5.15 million deal this winter, and with Britton’s injury, was slated to be one of the key late-inning options ahead of closer Aroldis Chapman.
