Keith: Do the Yankees need to get 'sexier'?

A caller declared to Keith McPherson that the Yankees need to get “sexier,” AKA younger, faster, and more athletic.

But Keith believes the Yanks not only have their own young core, but they are at a place in their window of contention where they need players that are ready to make an impact in the here and now, and not wait on young players to develop.

“Max Fried is 30, Bellinger is 29. Obviously you have Cole, Stanton, and Judge. Cole is 34, Stanton is 35, and Judge is about to be 33,” Keith said. “I don’t consider them ‘old,’ but I agree, they do have to get younger, faster, and more athletic.
That’s just how the game is going.

“That’s why they have Volpe, Wells, Gil, and Dominguez is gonna play.”

Keith didn’t notice any young pitchers own the playoffs outside of Tarik Skubal for the Tigers, and it simply comes down to who can perform. And when your team is leaning on the best hitter in baseball and a recent Cy Young winner, youth isn’t the priority. It’s putting together a team that can win as quickly as possible, and that means paying up in free agency for players like Fried.

“That’s just the way it goes. That’s how you improve your team in the offseason...these guys get top dollar,” Keith said.

“We are in a window that is win now. The window is closing. That’s why I’m not worried about a one-year deal for Paul Goldschmidt if he still has a year of being a professional hitter in him.”
