Aaron Boone told BT and Sal on Tuesday that he anticipates moving Jazz Chisholm back to his natural second base and open up third base for Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza to compete for the starting position.
Many fans were frustrated with that response, as they want to see an external upgrade at the hot corner, but Keith McPherson has no problem with the Yanks going into camp with a competition at third base.
“I’ve been talking for weeks about how you need competition in camp,” Keith said. “There isn’t really competition anywhere else going into spring training. You need competition. Iron sharpens iron...you’ll get the best out of everyone.”
LeMahieu could very well emerge as the starter considering his previous accomplishments and his contract, and if that’s the case, Keith won’t be screaming about it on the air.
“I can’t just throw my hands in the air and say ‘DJ sucks, he’s gonna hit .150. He’s shot.’” Keith said. “We don’t know that. He was shut down in September of last year. yes, he’s a year older, but he also has $30 million left on his contract this year and next year. they’re not just gonna throw that away, because of the back of his baseball card and his relationships with guys on that team.
“It’s not the end of the world if DJ LeMahieu is batting seventh or eighth or ninth...it’s okay, in my opinion.”
