Aaron Boone spoke with reporters on Tuesday as Yankees pitchers and catchers reported to spring training, touching on multiple topics including Jasson Dominguez, the third base competition, and who will bat leadoff once the season begins.
Asked about the leadoff spot, Boone simply replied, “I don’t know,” noting multiple names that could bat atop the order in 2025, including Jazz Chisholm.
Keith McPherson would like to see Chisholm strongly considered to bat leadoff, but he likes the idea of nothing being set in stone during camp, as players can compete for the spot.
“There needs to be competition in camp,” Keith said. “They need to go into spring training competing for it.
“[Jazz] has speed, he’s got experience doing it. Honestly, when they traded for him last season, I thought he was going to be their leadoff hitter.”
As for the third base dilemma, which remains the hottest topic among Yankee fans this offseason, Keith also likes the idea of competition, even though many lament the idea of DJ LeMahieu potentially winning the job.
“Good enough for me,” Keith said. “I know Yankee fans are all panicking about ‘DJ’s good’...he’s a veteran, he’s got a contract, people on the team love him, it’s as simple as that.”
