Keith McPherson was in the building for what Yankee fans hoped would be clinching day, but instead, it was another frustrating loss to the Orioles.
The champagne was left on ice, and while it is likely only delaying the inevitable, Keith says these last two games still spell trouble for the Bombers with October fast approaching.
“For all the Yankee fans that want to say ‘Relax, they’re in first place. What are you guys so mad about?’” Keith said. “Who’s gonna pitch in the postseason? Plot twist! You wake up to the Nestor Cortes news.
“As terrible as they’ve been...they came in here saying ‘We’re gonna clinch. We’re gonna be the ones popping champagne.’ And then they’re gonna say, ‘We’re talking the series from you. We’re gonna go up 8-4 on the season against you. We play a better brand of baseball when we play you.’”
The O’s have indeed taken eight of 12 against the Yanks this season, and the two teams entered this series seemingly heading in opposite directions, but that has turned around in a hurry. The Yanks are still four games up and just need to win one more game, but Keith says the way Baltimore has handled the Bombers in 2024 isn’t good news in the event that they meet again in the playoffs.
“They can come right back in two weeks for the ALDS,” Keith said. “How do you feel about that?”
