Keith went on the air shortly after the Yankees lost to the Rays, and like many fans, was furious about the handling of Domingo German.
“That was a circus. That was a clown show,” Keith said. “The fans don’t know what is going on.”
German was scratched from his start on Monday due to pain in his armpit, then curiously was the first arm out of the bullpen, tossing five shutout innings after a brutal start for emergency fill-in Jhony Brito had already put the game out of reach.
After the game, Aaron Boone told reporters that German saw the team doctor, was cleared, and gave it a go off the mound before the Yanks decided he was good to enter the game in relief.
“Who is making the decisions?” Keith said. “If Domingo was good at 5:00, and you couldn’t pivot there because Brito was already up and it was already announced? So what! You can’t afford to blow the game. You can’t afford to let Brito throw batting practice out there.
“The jokes write themselves. The Yankees are the armpit of the AL East. Here come the Stankees, armpit problems.”
For Keith, it was another example of how the Yankees try to outsmart everyone, only to make themselves look less smart.
“I really do believe, on the eve of the trade deadline, they had something cooking, and with Domingo German throwing a perfect game this season, they could sell him,” Keith said. “I’ve never seen that, and you’ve never seen that. You’ve never seen a guy scratched from his start hours before the game, and then be the first guy out of the bullpen.
“You’re getting too smart, ‘Smartest guys in the room.’ Smartest dumb guys in the room.”
