Keith: Don't forget that when Yankees really want free agent star, they tend to get them

A caller declared to Keith McPherson that the Yankees are not going to end up with Juan Soto this offseason due to the fact that the Yanks no longer operate the way they did in the days of George Steinbrenner.

It has been an all-too familiar refrain from Yankee fans since George’s son Hal took over the team, but Keith says the opinion doesn’t apply when it comes to Soto, because when Hal and the Yanks have a player they want in the Bronx, they seem to get them.

“I heard from Hal’s mouth when he spoke at the owners meetings,” Keith said. “He basically told you that it doesn’t matter what he’s said in the past.

“We can’t say the Yankees don’t do this anymore. They wanted Judge, they got him. They wanted Cole, they got him. When there’s a guy they want, they can always return to their superpower, their spending power.”

The Yankees haven’t gone on many wild spending sprees in Hal’s tenure, but they have signed stars to massive contracts in recent years, and after getting a taste of Soto in the Bronx last year, Keith believes Hal will be determined to keep the free agent superstar in pinstripes. And if that’s the case, they have the money to do so.

“Nobody knows how much they really make,” Keith said. “Get me the new numbers for what they made in the World Series this year.”
