Keith: Yankees 'weak' trade deadline could look even worse with Jazz Chisholm injury uncertainty
Jazz Chisholm could be headed to the IL with a UCL injury, an ailment that very well could end his season after making an immediate impact on the Yankees since the trade deadline.
For Keith, it is a far-too familiar feeling to see a new acquisition quickly go down with an injury to wipe away what was supposed to be a key reinforcement for a playoff run.
“This is déjà vu. This has happened before, in recent time,” Keith said. “Yankees trade for Edwin Encarnacion, gets hit by a pitch. The Yankees trade for Andrew Benintendi, he gets hit by a pitch.
“It’s like these guys come to the Yankees, newly acquired, they barely get to play, and are hurt on the IL.”
There are more recent names that come to mind, like Frankie Montas and Scott Effross, two deadline acquisitions in 2022 that barely saw the field in pinstripes. So, while Chisholm awaits a more firm diagnosis, and Mark Leiter Jr. struggles in two straight outings while Enyel De Los Santos looks like a non-factor out of the bullpen, the trade deadline pieces acquired last month are suddenly looking like ones that won’t have much of an impact in October.
“It was a weak trade deadline, and the biggest acquisition was Jazz Chisholm,” Keith said. “And now he’s unavailable.”
