Josh Donaldson went 0-for-3 in Thursday’s loss to the Mariners, dropping his season batting average to a lowly .127.
Many are convinced that the former MVP has nothing left in the tank, and Keith McPherson wonders why the Yankees ever thought it was a good idea to trade for Donaldson in the first place.
“To add that guy to that clubhouse, I don’t really know what Cashman was thinking or what he was on,” Keith said. “I think he just got finessed.”
The Yankees praised the energy and edge Donaldson would inject into the clubhouse, though he did need to patch things up with Gerrit Cole after the trade in the wake of their feud regarding Donaldson calling out Cole for sticky substance use. But Donaldson struggled all of last season, and has been even worse in 2023. The trade looks like a loss, and Keith says the Yanks just need to wave the white flag.
“I think they just convinced Cashman that he can return to form…and here we are, watching him in 2023 with the Yankees,” Keith said. “He shouldn’t be on this team after calling out Gerrit Cole, but you have Brian Cashman saying he needs more at-bats. I can’t watch another one.”
