Luis Gil leaves Tuesday's start in fourth inning with lower back tightness
Luis Gil exited Tuesday night’s Yankees-Guardians game during the fourth inning with what the team later termed lower back tightness.
Gil was in the midst of another rough outing when, in the fourth, he allowed a homer to Brayan Rocchio a walk to Steven Kwan before throwing a ball to Jose Ramirez and coming up looking stiff. That would be his 78th and final offering of the night, as Gil motioned with his glove to the dugout, bringing out manager Aaron Boone and trainer Tim Lentych, who removed him from the game after a brief conversation.
Tim Hill relieved Gil, getting Ramirez to line out and retiring the next two batter, ending Gil’s line at three runs on three hits with six walks in three-plus innings.
Losing Gil for any extended time could be difficult for a Yankees rotation that is already without Clarke Schmidt (lat), and has seen current top depth starter Will Warren post an 8.59 ERA in 14 2/3 innings over three starts.
Schmidt is expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week, and Cody Poteet (triceps) threw 34 pitches in two innings in his first rehab start for Double-A Somerset Tuesday night, but both are still at least a few weeks away.
Gil is now up to 124 1/3 innings over 24 starts this season, north of the career-high 108 1/3 he threw in 2021 in Class-A ball and way more than the 29 2/3 he threw in 2022-23 around Tommy John surgery, and he has allowed 11 runs in 22 1/3 innings in five second-half starts so far.
This is a developing story, so stay with WFAN and WFAN.com overnight and into tomorrow as more becomes available.
