Reporters caught up with Luke Voit shortly after news broke that he was being dealt to the Padres, and the slugging first baseman seemed excited to get a new chance where he will likely have more playing time.

“Relieved,” Voit said, via Newsday. “I knew something was gonna happen in the last day or two. I’m really excited. Not only a good organization, but they’ve got a team ready to win. I’m super excited.

“I can’t wait. Gonna be 75 every day, and won’t have to be in New York in April now. Really happy, it’s a good thing for my career. Kind of a fresh start.”

Voit was a productive hitter with the Yankees, and led the league in home runs in 2020, but his 2019 and 2021 seasons were ravaged by injuries, and with the Yanks bringing back Anthony Rizzo this week, Voit clearly no longer had a regular role with the team. Now, he will move across the country to another team with playoff aspirations.

“I want to thank the Yankees for bringing me over here and giving me a chance to play,” Voit said. “I appreciate everything they did. love the fanbase, loved putting the pinstripes on, smashing beers together and doing the home run trot. I wish all the guys the best of luck.”
