McMonigle: Yankee fans are 'crazy' if they think team is better off without Juan Soto
A caller declared to C-Mac that the Yankees losing Juan Soto is the best thing that could have happened to the team, as they won’t be committing nearly $50 million a year to one player over the next 15 years.
Noting how the money will be spread out among the rest of the roster with new additions this winter, C-Mac said that was insanity.
“For the same money you gave Soto, you can get Max Fried and Christian Walker,” C-Mac said. “Do you think that’s better?
“If he signed with the Yankees for $47.5 million every year, Max Fried just got $27.5. What are you doing with the other $20 million that makes you better than having Juan Soto?”
C-Mac answered his own question, declaring that there is no other player, or players, that can be signed with $20 million for next season that would be better than having Juan Soto as a Yankee for life at just 26 years old.
“Nobody. Absolutely nobody,” C-Mac said. “It’s just not there.
“Juan Soto is going to be a great player when Christian Walker is long retired, or when Max Fried is no longer pitching well. He’s 26. Yankee fans, I’m sorry, I want to be with you. But the idea that the best thing that happened to the Yankees is Juan Soto signing with the Mets? You’re crazy.”
The Yankees have a chance to be a better team than last season if they swing a trade for Kyle Tucker, but C-Mac says a Soto contract would have secured one of the game’s biggest stars for the long haul, and there is no alternative that is better than that.
“I don’t agree at all. It’s Plan B for a reason,” C-Mac said. “Because there was a Plan A.”
