Boomer & Gio: Do Mets need to win multiple World Series to justify Juan Soto contract?
Boomer Esiason made it clear before Juan Soto signed with the Mets that he didn’t believe one player, even of Soto’s caliber, was worth more than $600 million.
Now that Soto signed for much more than that, Boomer believes the payoff now needs to be multiple championships brought to Queens.
“My nephew Randy keeps saying to me, ‘Uncle Boomer, if they just win one World Series.’ No, no, no,” Boomer said.
“I’m still stunned at the amount of money…for $305 million over the next five years, which is $61 million a year for Juan Soto…”
That’s when Gio cut in and said that simply one title, especially for a franchise as starved for success as the Mets, makes the mammoth contract worth every penny.
“I’m with nephew Randy,” Gio said. “You have to remember, there’s a difference in the generations…he probably didn’t remember ’86, so he’s like, one championship for him is the world. If you have that, which we haven’t had as an adult, and you get to celebrate it with your children on top of that?”
