Moose sounds off on Nestor Cortes' social media post, mindset of modern Yankees

During Tuesday’s All-Star Game festivities, FOX Sports personalities like David Ortiz were having fun at the Yankees’ expense, and Nestor Cortes responded with a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Everyone talks down about the Yanks but they wanna be us,” Cortes wrote. “It’s a privilege to wear pinstripes. Every year we are in contention. I’m blessed to be able to compete for a playoff spot and always be contenders at the end.”

Moose took exception to that statement from the Yankee lefty, and the mindset it portrayed.

“I understand you’re blessed to be a Yankee, and it was a long road for Nestor Cortes…the lean is negative because the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009,” Moose said.

“The issue is this: the goal is winning. Not being in contention, not contending. The goal is winning. That is what has made the Yankees different than any other team in Major League Baseball.”

Moose says that type of mindset from Cortes is not one that anyone on the dynastic Yankee teams would have shared in the late 1990s, and that was the difference between them and this team now.

“The goals should not change. It should not be based on what the Diamondbacks did last year, where you get into the playoffs, cross your fingers, and hope for the best in the postseason,” Moose said. “I get it, you love pitching in the Bronx, you love being a Yankee…but don’t give me the nonsense about ‘the Yankees are contenders each and every year.’ The Yankees are spending $313 on their payroll. If they’re not contending, that’s a problem. The goal is winning.

“If you can’t take a little criticism when this team has gone 8-18…save that nonsense! You know the difference between the 2024 Yankees and the 1998 or 1999 Yankees? It’s that dopey statement.”
