Vegas may be shooting Patriots quarterback Drake Maye into the NFL MVP conversation, but it’s not a topic the young gunslinger is terribly interested by in his second year in the league.
“Oh shoot. No, I’ve got a lot of work to do. I think that’s a long way away. Getting some more wins is what I’m focused on,” Maye told ‘WEEI Afternoons’ during his weekly appearance on ‘Patriots Monday.’
Maye has led the Patriots to their first three-game winning streak since 2022. This season, he’s already compiled 1,522 passing yards and 10 touchdowns through six games.
Helpfully, he’s thrown just two interceptions – a huge leap from his rookie season.
Draftkings issued Maye the ninth-best odds to win MVP this season, (+2500). Josh Allen is still the favorite for the award after winning it last year.
Just one day after defeating the Saints and throwing three touchdowns in the first half, Maye sounds ready to turn the page to the Tennessee Titans – the team formerly coached by his current HC, Mike Vrabel.
“The big thing with that is starting next week in Tennessee.
That’s what I’m focused on. I think that stuff all comes to life when you start making plays and winning games,” Maye said, about getting MVP buzz.
He’s right, and his play has become impossible to ignore. As notes by ESPN’s NFL RedZone, Maye joined an exclusive club of quarterbacks 23 years old or younger who completed five consecutive games of 200 yards or more, while also attaining a passer rating of 100 or better. His peers include Patrick Mahomes, Dan Marino, and Dak Prescott.
