listen live to the weei 6 rings postgame show:
With the Patriots down 10-6 with 1:56 to go in the fourth quarter, Bill Belichick decided to bench quarterback Mac Jones for Bailey Zappe.
A bizarre decision, to say the least, given that the backup hadn't seen game action in six weeks and was being tasked with crossing a poor New England team across the finish line. Just unfair.
Here's what both quarterbacks, their teammates, and Belichick said about the move:
Bill Belichick:
"I just thought it was time for a change."
When asked if Mac Jones will start following the bye week against the Giants, he said that they'll "worry about next week next week. The game just finished like a half hour ago."
Mac Jones:
"They just told me I was out of the game. I wasn't playing very good, so I got taken out of the game before the two-minute drive at the end of the game. That's kind of what it was."
Bailey Zappe:
Said he "100%" believes he can be the Patriots starting quarterback.
David Andrews:
"I play football. That's what I do. I play. I don't make those decisions. Coaches do what they think's best for the football team."
Hunter Henry:
"I don't make all of those decisions. I think you'll have to ask coach about that one."
Matthew Slater:
“[Mac Jones] has got to stay positive. Right now everybody’s counting him out. I'm sure there's a lot of negativity. There's a lot of negativity surrounding our team. We've got to ignore all of that because it shouldn't impact how we operate day to day. You can’t let people who don’t know half of what’s going on in the building impact what’s going on in the building.”
