The Patriots lost to the Commanders 20-17 on Sunday and while plenty of things contributed to their seventh loss of the season, one play stood above the rest.

With 30 seconds left in the contest and New England down three and with the ball on the Washington 41-yard line, quarterback Mac Jones attempted an eight-yard pass on an in-breaker to wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, hitting him right in the hands.

Or should I say, right off the hands. The ball flew up in the air and was intercepted by trailing defensive back Jartavis Martin.

Game over. Patriots lose.

On WEEI’s Jones and Mego with Arcand show on Monday, quarterback Mac Jones spoke about what he said to Smith-Schuster following the contest:

“Oh, we’re good,” the signal caller explained. “I mean, I told him, ‘If you don’t make the play before that one, then we’re not there.’ It’s football. It’s a bang-bang play. It’s always like that in the NFL, right? It goes one way or the other. If you make the play then maybe we go into overtime and if you don’t, you don’t. It is what it is. I can do  things better throughout the game to not even be in that position, so. Everyone wants to put one thing on one player but we’re all in this together and that’s how we approach it.”

Smith-Schuster finished Sunday’s game against Washington with a team-high six catches for 51 yards.

Jones also spoke about the team’s upcoming trip to Germany, texting ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, and more on Monday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
