Jerod Mayo reacts to Mac Jones' monster preseason showing for Jaguars

It doesn’t sound like Jerod Mayo was gazing longingly at his television Saturday night as Mac Jones diced up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The former New England Patriots quarterback put on a solid display for the Jaguars on Saturday night, going 16-for-23 in the air for 210 yards with a pair of touchdowns. It was a performance that served as a reminder of why hope was so high around the 25-year-old after his rookie season.

Of course, things went sideways for Jones after his 2021 campaign, which is why he’s now in Jacksonville and the Patriots rolling with Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye. The page has been turned, which was evident when the Pats head coach was asked about Jones’ performance Monday on The Greg Hill Show.

“Look, I wish nothing but the best for Mac,” Mayo said. “He’s having a good preseason and I’m happy for him. I always talk about (how) these are long-term relationships, you guys have heard me say that. I wish him nothing but the best -- unless he’s playing the Patriots.”

Jacksonville brought in Jones to back up starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Jones always had the inside track on the backup job over C.J Beathard, but Saturday’s display all but certainly locked Jones into the second string job.
