6 rings: Pats get pummeled in latest NFLPA Team Report Card
The Patriots are putting their money where their mouth is in trying to keep one of their in-house free agents.
According to MassLive's Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian, New England has a contract offer on the table for safety Kyle Dugger, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next month.
When speaking about Dugger this week at the NFL Combine, both de facto general manager Eliot Wolf and head coach Jerod Mayo made it known that they want to keep the safety in Foxborough.
“We definitely want to keep... Kyle,” Wolf said. on Tuesday. “We’re hopeful to continue to work with Kyle’s agent... to make that happen.”
"With Dugger," Mayo said on Wednesday. "I would say last year going into the season, there were some questions about can he communicate and all those things. He squashed all of that last year. He did a fantastic job in his new role without having Devin there. You definitely want those pieces to stay. Going back to what I talked about earlier, you develop through the draft, so if those guys say, obviously, they’ve been raised here and they can help push the culture forward."
“Draft and develop, Wolf later said when talking about what the team's philosophy will be. "Extend your core performers from within."
Both Wolf and Mayo said the franchise tag could be an option for Dugger. His number, with the NFL's new salary cap, would be $17,123,000 on a one-year deal.
