No other receiver in the NFL can claim to know both Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Bills gunslinger Josh Allen like Stefon Diggs, the 32-year-old vet who has now won a slew of games with both.
At his locker Wednesday, Diggs didn’t shy away from the head-to-head comparisons between the two players.
“As far as the MVP conversation, that guy on the other side of the ball we’re about to play against is a hell of a player,” Diggs said about Allen, his former Buffalo teammate and the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player.
“I believe that team kind of, goes through him,” Diggs continued. “At this point, I like our guy. Our guy’s playing extremely well. I’m not going to put it all on him. We’ve obviously been supporting him, but he’s done a great job at making good decisions, play-in and play-out and I’m super proud of him. I’m anticipating this game being no different. We’re just going to all have to give our best effort.”
Through 13 games, Maye has the edge on Allen in record, completion percentage, (71.5%), passing yards per attempt, (8.8), passing yards per game, (262.5), and overall passer rating, (111.9). Allen, however, has a big advantage in rushing yards, (487, compared to Maye’s 319), as well as rushing yards per attempt, (5.6), and rushing touchdowns, (12, compared to Maye’s two).
Oddsmakers have Maye in the second spot for MVP, behind L.A.
Rams’ quarterback, Matthew Stafford.
When asked whether Diggs would have any words for the defense regarding Allen’s ability to win a game late, he deferred to the coaching staff.
“I ain’t saying [expletive], that ain’t my job,” Diggs said with a smile, prompting laughs. “He’s a hell of a quarterback. I don’t think our defense needs any more coaching points. I’m not running over there. That’s how you get cussed out. I’ll leave that for the coaches.”
Diggs also wasn’t aware that Vegas has the Patriots as underdogs against the Bills.
“Good,” he said, when informed.
If the Patriots win on Sunday, they will clinch the AFC East for the first time since 2019.
