Stephon Gilmore wasn't on the field Sunday for the Patriots, as he's on PUP still working his way back from a quad injury suffered late last year. The earliest he can return is Week 7.
While all the indications from Bill Belichick are that it's still an injury thing, some believe Gilmore is upset with his contract that has him making $7 million in the final year of his deal. The cornerback could be looking at it where he now gets paid $7 million over 11 games, instead of $7 million over 17 games.
Appearing on The Greg Hill Show Tuesday morning, Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law believes Gilmore deserves to be paid.
“He is one of the guys that really deserves to get paid and be paid what he’s worth," he said. "You can’t find guys to go out there and say, ‘OK, you got ‘em.’ That is very rare.”
Law has no issue with Gilmore getting a bump in pay last year and potentially looking for more money this year, even though he signed a contract.
“How much more leverage are you going to have when you’re the [Defensive Player of the Year]? First of all, as a corner to get Defensive Player of the Year, he’s earned it," he said. "It was at the end of his first contract. So, yes, I want to get a new contract. Am I going to risk going out there not getting paid, because it’s probably going to be his last one. … This is definitely going to be his last contract.”
As for if Gilmore is really hurt right now?
“My guess is he’s playing it the right way, and he wants his money," Law said. "I don’t know. Stephon is my boy, but I don’t know. I think he is one of the guys who deserves to get paid his money.”
