Multiple Giants players sounded off on the team looking “soft” in New York’s 30-7 blowout loss to the Bucs, with veteran leaders like Dexter Lawrence being among the players to rip the team’s effort at home.
Many criticized the Giants for quitting on their head coach, and the season, for the handling of Daniel Jones, as many players didn’t hide their frustration with how the quarterback was benched and dropped all the way down to fourth-string QB before being granted his release.
If the Jones situation had anything to do with Sunday’s effort by the players still with the Giants, Boomer Esiason says that would be absolutely unacceptable.
“Everybody is upset and I understand it, but Daniel Jones needed to be benched, so get over it,” Boomer said. “He missed wide-open guys in London, didn’t pull the trigger…it was all there for him, and unfortunately, he could not pull the trigger and get it done.
“The quarterback is the one who leads the entire team. He’s the one who everyone looks at…they want him to be the man, and they paid him to be the man. Unfortunately for Daniel Jones, it didn’t work out.”
Tommy DeVito didn’t look any better than Jones in his season debut, but Boomer says Jones had to be benched given how he performed all season, and players should be able to understand the big picture and not throw in the towel because of a decision that they didn’t agree with.
“The players who were left behind have to get over it,” Boomer said. “It’s part of the business.”
