Kenny Golladay hasn’t played much at all this season for the Giants, but he got some extended run on Sunday as the Giants rested all their starters on offense.
He only had two grabs for 30 yards, but one of those was a 25-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter, which he snagged with superstar corner Darius Slay blanketing him and managed to keep his feet in bounds.
It brought the Giants within one score and an onside kick away from a chance to pull the upset, and after the play, cameras caught head coach Brian Daboll sit down next to Golladay, put his arm around the receiver, and have a happy chat.
A highlight in a lost season, but one Daboll hopes can help Golladay keep the faith as the Giants head into the postseason.
“I think getting to know the guys, I have a wide variety of emotions I think I show. This one was more. I just was proud of the young man.
He made a great play,” Daboll said. “I asked him if he thought we'd have cheesesteaks after, when we got out on the buses.”
Golladay seems to have been the biggest example of Daboll’s strategy of giving playing time to those who work hard without regard to contract status or anything else, and as days go on, it looks more and more likely that he will be elsewhere next year.
But, none of that means Daboll doesn’t respect the man who was the previous administration’s last big free agent signing.
“I respect all of our players. Every player has a different journey. Every player goes through different things, and he's certainly a guy that I respect a lot,” Daboll said.
And maybe, just maybe, after a season where Golladay had just six catches for 81 yards and that TD, he might have a chance at a role in the playoffs – something he’s never had a chance at in six years.
“We’ll see,” Daboll said. “Kenny's worked hard since he's been here. Again, every week's a different plan, the way we want to do things, but I think everything's on the table.”
