Justin Fields has been playing better of late, culminating in a 268-yard day through the air in last week’s win over the Cardinals in which Fields completed 20 of 32 passes.
But with Chicago holding the top pick, many wonder if this weekend will be a farewell to the Bears for Fields.
If that is the case, Evan made the case for why the Giants should explore a trade.
“They’re gonna add a quarterback, it’s just a matter of how,” Evan said of Big Blue. “If Justin Fields is available…you’d be trading for one year of Justin Fields to see, ‘Is he our guy?’ If you draft a quarterback…you’re not making a one-year commitment. You’re making a three or four-year commitment…and you’re also declaring that Daniel Jones is gone. It’s over.
“If you trade for Justin Fields…obviously what you have to give up for him matters, but if I give up a reasonable package, I’m having a real competition…and if after this year, I say I’m back in love with Daniel Jones, I’m moving on from Justin Fields. You gave up a pick, but you gave it a try. Or, Justin Fields develops, especially under the tutelage of Brian Daboll, and you say, ‘I got my guy,’ and you move on from Daniel Jones.”
Tiki is much more hesitant to the idea.
“You’d basically be trading for him to compete with an injured Daniel Jones,” Tiki said. “Do you want Justin Fields to potentially start your season next year? That’s what it could come down to, because he’s played well enough to do that.
“I think he’s done enough to make him trade worthy, but he hasn’t done enough for me to say I want him on the Giants. He’s a great runner…but the decision making isn’t there yet to say I would potentially want him over a healthy Daniel Jones.”
