The Giants have added depth to their receiving corps by claiming former 49ers wideout Dante Pettis.
Big Blue announced they were awarded the waiver claim on the former Washington Huskies standout following his release by San Francisco earlier this week.
Pettis, 25, was a second-round pick of the Niners in 2018. He showed promise as a rookie, but he appeared to fall out of favor last season and has been a virtual afterthought this season despite a rash of injuries to the Niners' offense.
The California native hauled in 27 catches for 467 yards -- an average of 17 ypc -- and 5 touchdowns in his rookie season, but saw his receptions fall to just 11 in 2019.
The 6-foot-0 Pettis is the son of former Major Leaguer Gary Pettis. He was not expected to suit up Sunday to allow for sufficient time for appropriate coronavirus testing, the team said.
Pettis' arrival comes at an uncertain moment for the Giants at the wide receiver position, with veteran Golden Tate being excused from practice on Wednesday after his wife appeared to call out the team for failing to find more touches for her husband.
Tate has fallen to a third or fourth option in terms of targets from quarterback Daniel Jones. Pettis would presumably be the Giants' fourth receiver behind Tate, Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard.
