Giants match lowly NFL record after blowing another double-digit lead

The Giants must be allergic to fourth-quarter leads.

Once again, Big Blue has coughed up a late lead, falling to the Lions in overtime after holding a 10-point advantage with under 11 minutes to go in the game.

New York led Detroit 27-17 after one of the wildest touchdowns in franchise history, where Jameis Winston snuck into the secondary, hauled in a pass from a scrambling Gunner Olszewski and broke a tackle to run in a 40-yeard touchdown courtesy of the Philly Special. All of the momentum seemed to be leaning the Giants way after that score, but yet again, the defense faltered, giving up a 49-yard touchdown run to Jahmyr Gibbs moments later, and surrendered the game-tying field goal after New York went for it on fourth-and-goal but failed to convert.

It was hard to blame Mike Kafka for going for the touchdown with the lack of resistance from the defense, which allowed Gibbs to break free again for a 69-yard score on the first play of overtime.

The loss tied an NFL record as the fifth this season in which Big Blue has blown a double-digit lead, according to Jordan Ranaan of ESPN. The Giants are now 2-5 in games that they have led by 10 or more.

Other improbable losses include the collapse at Denver after leading 26-8 in the second half, losing to the lowly Saints after leading 14-3, and falling in Chicago after leading the Bears 20-10.

Since firing Brian Daboll, the Giants have lost twice, and in both of those games, they held a lead in the fourth quarter.

With the loss to Detroit, the 2-10 Giants have also become the first team in the league this year to be officially eliminated from playoff contention.
