John Mara says Dave Gettleman isn't on hot seat, but expects step forward for Giants

The Giants are looking to snap a skid of four straight losing seasons, and after finishing 6-10 last year under first-year head coach Joe Judge, the front office is looking for another step forward in 2021.

General manager Dave Gettleman is expecting a noticeable improvement after logging a year under Judge’s system while making multiple upgrades on offense during the offseason.

“I feel like I really love Joe and the process he’s brought and we’ve brought,” Gettleman told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ve worked really hard since I got here in terms of not only on the field operations but off the field operations. We’ve made big changes in our football operations, how we operate. My goal when we got here was whenever I leave here, however I leave here, that we’ve set this tem up, both on the field and off the field, that’s been my goal. I feel we’ve done that. I’m excited to see what’s gonna happen this year.”

Co-owner John Mara is also expecting an increase in wins this season for Big Blue.

“I certainly think we're a lot better on paper,” Mara said. “I'd like to see us show that on the field, win some games, and make the playoffs. that’s my expectations coming into the season every year. Obviously we’ve fallen well short of that the last four years. But on paper, I’m pleased with where we are, but I want to see us win some games.”

Regardless if New York improves upon its win total from last year or not, it doesn’t appear that Gettleman’s job will be at risk, as Mara quieted those questions despite Gettleman posting a record of 15-33 as general manager.

“We're all on the hot seat with our fans in particular, we've given them too many losing seasons,” Mara said. “It’s time for us to start winning. But no, I wouldn’t say that. I wouldn't say that's an accurate statement.”

Mara wouldn’t definitively say if he felt the Giants were still rebuilding or ready to contend, but he made it clear that the expectation is for the team to show improvement from last year and compete for a chance to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

“How do you define rebuild?” Mara said. “I expect to win more games than we did last year. Hopefully we’re gonna be a playoff team this year. So you can call it anything you want. I just want to feel like after the last game, what we have here is a team that can win the Super Bowl.”
