Keith: Giants can't stop 'fumbling situations,' and letting Saquon Barkley go was one of them

The Giants will be making no major changes this offseason in terms of the GM and the head coach, and Keith believes that is a poor reflection on ownership and John Mara, who he says is doomed to repeat his mistakes if something doesn’t change.

“There is work to be done, or we’ll be right back here next year doing the same thing,” Keith said. “They’ve been a doormat for a long time. Something is wrong, and it starts at the top.”

Mara is seemingly sticking with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll for the sake of stability, but Keith says that is only in response to Mara firing head coaches and GMs after just two seasons for nearly a decade, and at some point, the issue is the person hiring all of these failed regimes.

“Wrong decisions being made on who to hire and who to draft. Just fumbling situations over and over again,” Keith said. “Handling Eli Manning’s Iron Man streak, Coughlin resigning, drafting Daniel Jones.”

Keith also added that one of the glaring mistakes from the past calendar year can be found down the turnpike, which Mara already admitted keeps him up at night, though it was a decision that he deferred to Schoen, the man he hired to turn the Giants around.

“The latest one is Saquon...he was your guy that you drafted No. 2 overall and he wanted to be here,” Keith said.

“He was a good man and a good citizen off the field and in the locker room...you let these guys come in with their principles of how they value running backs, and they wouldn’t break that mold for him. You let these guys come in with their theories of ‘we’re not paying that money to running backs.’ Maybe you should have. Maybe you shouldn’t have put so much money in Daniel Jones just because he’s a quarterback. The quarterback’s best friend is a good running back. That season that they won all those games and won that playoff game, Saquon Barkley was the main reason on offense, not Daniel Jones.”
