Keith: Will Giants' handling of Drew Lock impact other free agents interest?

Drew Lock spoke with reporters on Wednesday and didn’t hide the fact that he was upset with being passed over in favor of Tommy DeVito, as Lock made it clear that he was under the impression that he was the backup quarterback behind Daniel Jones.

But Jones has been benched and Lock is still the QB2, and Keith McPherson wonders if that decision could impact free agents coming to New York in the future.

“This might make other free agents wary of signing with the Giants because of how they do business,” Keith said. “We never thought he would sign for $5 million a year to sign with Tommy DeVito.”

Lock’s contract has up to $3 million in playing and performance incentives, which he likely will not reach thanks to the decision to start DeVito. Lock likely thought he would have a good chance to play given Daniel Jones’ injury history and performance in 2023, but now, he might not see the field at all the rest of the way, which Keith understands Lock being frustrated about.

“‘Why am I still the QB2? Why did I sign here?’” Keith said.

“Drew Lock could have signed anywhere, and he chose to come here behind an injury-prone Daniel Jones, an actually injured Daniel Jones who we weren’t sure would be ready for training camp. He chose to sign here, and he’s not getting the opportunity.”
