Mike Glennon 'ready to go' and 'excited' for first start in 2021 for Giants

All week, Mike Glennon knew there was a chance he would be pressed into duty at quarterback for the Giants on Sunday, given Daniel Jones’ neck injury.

So, when Jones was officially ruled out on Friday and Glennon was officially named the starter, he had been prepared for the moment.

“I took the reps and feel ready to go, and I’m excited to get down there and help our team win,” Glennon said. “There’s a little height to it knowing you’ll definitely be out there versus wondering what if, but nothing changed with my film study, and it was good to get the reps you typically don’t get.”

Another piece of flux for the Giants offense, who got a new play-caller in Freddie Kitchens last week and now has a new starting quarterback this week, but it’s all good to Glennon and the team.

“It’s probably not much different than Daniel felt last week. I feel good with what Freddie has put together, we’ve had good communication,” Glennon said.

“We have a lot of confidence in Mike and he’s played well for us when he’s been in,” head coach Joe Judge added. “Mike worked with Freddie all last week as well, and he does a great job of being ready every week. He’s a true pro and a great leader.”

Glennon had some fun with the media about the Giants adding some RPO and bootleg plays to take advantage of his speed – “I’m sure they’re fearing it and have a whole new game plan!” he laughed – but jokes aside, he knows that Miami is one of the biggest blitzing teams in the NFL, and he and the Giants’ offensive line are going to have to be ready.

“They’re playing well and create challenges with their pressure looks, and we know we’ll have to do a good job on that if we want to win the game,” Glennon said. “I think we have a good plan on how to attack it.”

Glennon has had input with Kitchens and the staff and said he “spoke up” about things he liked, and had some thoughts on whether or not the offense will have to get away from the “get the ball to the playmakers” mantra they want to embrace to change the offense around him.

“A little of that philosophy of is letting the read take you to guys, instead of designing a play for one guy,” he said. “There’s pros and cons, but you still have to trust your eyes and your read, and if the ball takes you to those guys, you throw it to them, and if not, you move on.”

Regardless of the situation, Glennon hasn’t won a game since 2017 – he was 0-5 as a starter with Jacksonville last season and 1-3 with Chicago in 2017 – and has a 6-21 career record as a starter, so numbers aren’t on his side…but Glennon says that all means nothing, and he wants to win not because of his record, but because he wants the Giants to win.

“I don’t really take that personally, I mean, I started five games and we were 1-15. I want to win because I want to help the Giants win this week,” Glennon said. “I haven’t had a whole lot of opportunities to start in the NFL, so when you get one, there’s an excitement to get out there and play again.”

He may get a few opportunities depending on how severe Jones’ neck injury turns out to be, but when asked if the knowledge that Danny Dimes was liable to miss games had any bearing on Glennon’s mind when signing in New York, he reminded everyone that this is still Jones’ team no matter what.

“You don’t consider that. I want Daniel to be out there as much as anyone, but at the same time, it’s my job to get ready to go and give our team a chance to win.”
