Craig: What if Giants played hardball with Saquon Barkley by signing Dalvin Cook?

Saquon Barkley isn’t happy with what the franchise tag would pay him this season, but Evan says Dalvin Cook’s release by the Vikings doesn’t bode well for Barkley’s shots of getting a much better payday.

“He is a free agent. Everybody can negotiate with him,” Evan said of Cook. “What’s he getting on the open market with everybody negotiation on him? If he’s gonna have to settle for a one-year deal…doesn’t that in a lot of ways kill Saquon Barkley’s negotiation?

“The running back position is dead in the NFL when it comes to making big money.”

Craig says there has to be a middle ground for Barkley and the Giants, but if Big Blue really wanted to play hardball, could they bring in Cook on a one-year deal to show the offense could maintain its level of production with another running back in the fold?

“If the New York Giants wanted to twist Saquon Barkley a bit, you sign Dalvin Cook to a one-year deal for $5 million with incentives,” Craig said. “I’m just suggesting. ‘Oh, you don’t think we’ll find an answer for you? We’ll find an answer for you.’”

That would certainly leave Barkley stuck, as no team is sacrificing two first-round draft picks to add a running back that has been franchise tagged.
