With Aaron Rodgers reportedly agreeing to a restructured contract that will pay him more than $107 million in 2024, Gio says there is no way Zach Wilson is with the Jets for the long haul.
“His fourth year will be next year, and his fifth year option is the year after that,” Gio said. “There’s no way in hell, especially if they’re paying Aaron Rodgers $107 million for one year, that they’re gonna keep him around.
“When I saw all this yesterday…and you saying that Rodgers is gonna play three years here, that sealed the fate of Zach Wilson. Gone.”
Boomer agrees that it will be tough to see Wilson in a Jets uniform much longer if Rodgers is around and making that kind of money, but he says there is evidence in the league right now that suggests the former No. 2 overall pick can still turn into an impactful starting quarterback.
If you want proof, look no further than a former Jet.
“Look what Geno Smith did later on in his career,” Boomer said. “It doesn’t happen often, but it doesn’t happen. A guy goes to a couple different places, he doesn’t really fit in and he’s not really comfortable…then he goes and quietly becomes the backup for Russell Wilson, the Seahawks get rid of Russell Wilson, and now he’s the starter in Seattle with a huge contract.”
