BT & Sal: Jets have to reach out to Mike McCarthy after reportedly splitting with Cowboys

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Mike McCarthy is out as Cowboys head coach after the two sides were not able to agree on a new contract after an injury-ravaged Dallas team missed the postseason.

Per Pelissero, McCarthy is now “exploring other options,” and BT and Sal agree that the Jets better make themselves one of those options and get on the phone ASAP.

“He’s available. He’s out there now,” Sal said. “I don’t know how they can interview everyone else and not inquire about McCarthy...now that McCarthy shakes free, the Jets have to inquire about him.”

McCarthy had reportedly been garnering interest from the Bears and Saints (Chicago requested to interview McCarthy last week and the Cowboys rejected it), but the Jets - who have already interviewed a long list of head coaching candidates - have a familiar face for McCarthy in Aaron Rodgers, as the two won a Super Bowl together in Green Bay. BT would immediately call McCarthy to see his interest in reuniting with Rodgers next season.

“Sometimes things just fall in your lap, and here is a Super Bowl winning coach,” BT said. “I know he has a complex legacy and isn’t a platinum, five-star head coach...but he’s probably in the next tier. He’s there with Coughlin.

“If Mike McCarthy, who raved and spoke very highly of Rodgers on the Enigma documentary...and Aaron Rodgers wants to still play and be a Jet, how do you not make the call?”
