Slimmed-down C.J. Mosley says he will be better than memorable Jets debut performance

C.J. Mosley is still looking to show the Jets that his five-year, $85 million deal was a worthwhile one, showed up at Jets training camp noticeably lighter as he returns to action for the first time since Week 6 of the 2019 season.

Lighter than he’s ever been in his NFL career, Mosley is looking to put together a full season with the Jets after opting out of the 2020 campaign and missing all but two games in his debut season due to a groin injury. But health and lost weight have Mosley confident that he will show off some serious speed for Gang Green on the defensive end this season.

“I weighed in around 231 last week,” Mosley told reporters at Jets training camp on Tuesday. “I probably haven’t been that since I got to the NFL, like my senior year of college. I think my speed probably should be like a 95-plus when Madden comes back out. But I gotta put good film on tape.”

Some of the only tape of Mosley in a Jets uniform was his unforgettable introduction to the New York fans, returning an interception for a touchdown in Week 1 against the Bills in 2019, then recovered a fumble in a 17-16 loss. But a groin injury that eventually required surgery ended his season, and after opting out last year, that Week 1 performance has been the peak of his Jets tenure, but Mosley thinks it could be even better.

“I feel like I'm a better player than what that game was,” the four-time Pro Bowler said. “Honestly, I’m tired of seeing those same highlights for the past two years. I'm ready to put some new film on tape.”

He will now get that chance this season, and the slimmed-down Mosley is ready to beef up his Jets highlight reel in 2021 and make up for lost time.

“I’m just excited to still have this opportunity,” Mosley said. “This sport isn’t given. Life isn’t given, so I’m not taking anything for granted…I feel like I’m 100 percent. I’m ready to go. That’s what it’s all about.”
