The Jets have hired The 33rd Team to help find candidates to be the team’s next head coach and general manager, as the group led by former Gang Green GM Mike Tannenbaum will help mold the next era of Jets football.
Some criticized the move as “typical Jets,” and another misstep by Woody Johnson to bring in someone who already failed in New York to pick the next certain failure to lead the organization. But others see The 33rd Team as the group that helped the Commanders build their current leadership group, which is off to a stellar start in Washington after new GM Adam Peters and company drafted Jayden Daniels, who looks like a star in the making.
For Chris McMonigle, the move does give off the impression that the Jets owner is comfortable with what is familiar, meaning Rex Ryan actually could be a real candidate to return as head coach.
“It’s just a case of these owners, and specifically Woody Johnson...going back to what’s comfortable for then,” C-Mac said. “That’s why I think Rex Ryan is a legitimate option as the head coach, because he likes to go back and be comfortable.
“I do think Rex is a legitimate candidate to be the head coach.”
As for the decision to hire Tannenbaum and The 33rd Team, C-Mac says it will be received as “same old Jets” simply because of Tannenbaum’s involvement and the continued misery of the organization as it labors through one of its most disastrous seasons ever, given the preseason hype.
“A former GM in this town, had some success here, understands the pitfalls and what it takes...you could do worse, I guess, but it just feels like a joke,” C-Mac said. “Mike Tannenbaum is gonna run the show? It’s just more of the same, and the idea that the Jets haven’t built any equity. Nobody cuts them any slack, every move is scrutinized.
“The Jets just continue to be the Jets.”
