One week ago, Jets linebacker CJ Mosley was venting his frustrations about the Eagles disrespecting Gang Green during New York’s Week 13 loss, and that “teams are not respecting” his group.
One week later, Mosley is embracing any negativity thrown the Jets way, even after another lopsided loss, the latest one ensuring another double-digit loss season and another year added to their now 11-year playoff drought, the longest active streak in the NFL.
“We have to have a mindset that it doesn’t matter what they say…they can talk about it, they can laugh at you, but as long as we believe in the locker room, none of that even matters,” Mosley said. “They can say whatever they want, tweet whatever they want, type whatever they want, because you’re not the one in the building. You’re not the one going through what we’re going through.”
Mosley himself is accepting criticism for what has been an awful defense so far this season, as New York has allowed the second most yards per game in the league, the fourth most rushing yards per game, and the most points per game by a wide margin (the Jets have allowed 30.5 points per game compared to the Raiders 27.7).
“Anything about the defense, you can put it on me,” Mosley said. “I don’t care, because I know what I’m doing every week to try to improve myself and be better for this team.”
Mosley carries a certain amount of expectation after signing a five-year, $85 million deal with the Jets back in 2019, and while the team as a whole didn’t have grand expectations heading into this season, there was at least a hope that there would be signs of progress along the way, and reasons to believe that the franchise was heading in the right direction.
Instead, there has only been frustration and more questions, which Mosley says doesn’t bother him in the slightest.
“You gotta be built for it,” Mosley said. “When you say you come to a place to improve and to change things and culture change it and it doesn’t happen, you’re gonna get all the criticism in the world. But I told myself last week, I’m built for it. I’m built for all the criticism.”
The Jets have earned plenty of the criticism that has come their way after Sunday’s blowout loss to the Saints dropped the team to 3-10, but Mosley isn’t letting that affect his belief that better days are ahead.
“I truly, truly believe that this is a building block that is going to make a strong foundation for what is to come,” Mosley said.
